Open Wave Field Synthesis (2024)
By Max Hunter and Daniel John Jones
Wave field synthesis is a spatial audio rendering technique that uses high-density loudspeaker arrays to reproduce the pressure fronts of spatially-distributed sound sources, creating realistic three-dimensional sound scenes.
Created in conjunction with electronic engineer and creative technologist Max Hunter, Open Wave Field Synthesis (working title) is a modular wave field synthesis system with open-source hardware schematics and software stack, designed for experimentation and prototyping new approaches to working with spatial sound.
The system debuted at Electromagnetic Field 2024 with a new spatial sound piece, “On The Surface Of The Ocean”.
